What hs-CRP Is and What It Tells You

C-reactive protein is a substance made by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. The "hs" stands for high-sensitivity, meaning this particular test can detect much smaller amounts of CRP than the standard version, making it useful for picking up low-grade, chronic inflammation rather than only acute infections or injuries.

Because inflammation is thought to play a role in the process behind cardiovascular disease, hs-CRP is often used alongside cholesterol and other cardiovascular markers to get a broader picture of long-term health.   • Fasting glucose or HbA1c
  • Blood pressure readings
  • Markers such as ESR if broader inflammation is suspected

Lifestyle factors commonly discussed in relation to inflammation include maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and not smoking. These are general wellness levers rather than treatments for a specific number, and any significant or persistent elevation is worth discussing with your doctor, who can consider your full health picture, symptoms, and other lab results before recommending next steps.

Tracking It Over Time

A single hs-CRP value can be influenced by so many short-term factors that it is often more useful to look at a trend over multiple measurements rather than one isolated result. Testing hs-CRP every few months, or as advised by your doctor, can help distinguish a temporary spike from a more consistent pattern.

Consistent elevation across several tests, especially when unrelated to illness or injury, tends to carry more meaning than a single high reading. Tracking over time also helps you and your doctor evaluate whether lifestyle changes or other interventions are associated with a shift in your inflammatory profile.
