What is urine pH?
Urine pH is an indicator that describes the acidity or alkalinity of urine. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 14: values below 7 indicate an acidic environment, a value of 7 is neutral, and values above 7 indicate an alkaline environment. Urine can naturally be either acidic or alkaline -- this depends on many physiological factors.
The kidneys play an important role in regulating the body's acid-base balance. They filter the blood and adjust urine composition so that blood pH remains within a safe range. Urine pH changes throughout the day -- in the morning it is usually more acidic, and after meals it may become more alkaline. This is a normal physiological response.
Urine pH is measured as part of a routine urinalysis. The test is simple: a special indicator strip or automated analyzer is used. It does not provide a definitive diagnostic basis on its own, but together with other indicators it helps form a more comprehensive picture of kidney function and metabolic status.
Reference ranges
Normal urine pH ranges from 4.5 to 8.0. This range is quite broad because urine acidity naturally varies depending on diet, hydration, physical activity, and metabolic processes.
Most commonly, a healthy person's urine pH is around 6.0 -- a mildly acidic environment. Values below 4.5 are considered too acidic, and above 8.0 -- too alkaline. However, a single pH reading rarely has clinical significance without context -- what matters is that it is consistently evaluated alongside other test data and the patient's symptoms.
It is worth noting that pH may change if urine sits for a long time before testing -- bacteria can make it alkaline. Therefore, the sample should be tested as soon as possible after collection.
Why it may be elevated (alkaline urine)
Alkaline urine (pH above 8.0) can be caused by various factors. One of the most common is a diet rich in fruits and vegetables with little meat. A vegetarian or vegan diet is often associated with higher urine pH.
Urinary tract infections caused by certain bacterial species capable of breaking down urea can also make urine alkaline. In this case, pH often exceeds 7.5 and may be accompanied by other signs -- burning, more frequent urination, or cloudiness.
Other possible factors include: certain medications (e.g., those that alkalinize kidney function), renal tubular acidosis, and hyperventilation, when too much carbon dioxide is expelled from the body. In older adults, the kidney's pH regulation mechanisms may function less efficiently.
Why it may be decreased (acidic urine)
Acidic urine (pH below 4.5) is most commonly associated with a diet dominated by protein-rich products: meat, fish, eggs. A high protein load creates more acidic waste, which the kidneys excrete in the urine.
In diabetes, especially when blood glucose levels are high, urine may also become more acidic. Dehydration is another common cause: concentrated urine is usually more acidic.
Intense physical exercise, prolonged fasting, or a ketogenic diet can also lower urine pH. Certain metabolic conditions in which the body produces too many acids are reflected in this indicator's changes.
What to do next
If urine pH falls outside the normal range, the most important thing is not to panic. A single measurement is just a momentary snapshot, not a diagnosis. Your doctor or family physician may recommend a repeat test, evaluate other urinalysis indicators, and order additional blood tests.
Before the test, it is worth informing your doctor about medications, supplements, and dietary habits -- all of these can influence the result. If other symptoms are present (pain, burning, color changes), they should be discussed during the visit.
Diet is one of the most effective ways to influence urine pH naturally, but any changes should be coordinated with a specialist, especially if other health conditions exist.
Monitoring over time
Urine pH is not an indicator that needs to be measured very frequently. It is most commonly tested as part of routine urinalysis, which may be performed annually or according to your doctor's recommendations.
If a persistent pH deviation to one side is observed, it is worth discussing with your doctor. Chronically very acidic urine may increase the risk of kidney stones in the context of certain metabolic disorders. Persistently alkaline urine may indicate a chronic infection or other processes requiring attention.
At home, pH can be monitored using test strips available at pharmacies, but these measurements are only approximate and should not replace laboratory tests.
