What is body fat percentage
Body fat percentage (BF%) shows what proportion of your body mass consists of adipose tissue. This metric reflects body composition more accurately than weight or BMI alone, because it separates fat mass from muscle, bone, and water.
BF% can be measured in various ways: bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA, smart scales), skinfold measurements, DEXA scanning, or hydrostatic weighing. Consumer BIA scales are not very accurate in absolute terms (margin of error 3–5%), but they show trends over time very well — so the value lies in tracking, not in a single measurement.

BF% norms differ by sex and age:
Men:
- Athletes: 6–13%
- Healthy level: 14–20%
- Acceptable: 21–24%
- Elevated: >25%
Women:
- Athletes: 14–20%
- Healthy level: 21–28%
- Acceptable: 29–32%
- Elevated: >33%
BF% naturally increases with age — this is a physiological process. What matters more than the absolute number is the trend and the amount of visceral (around-the-organs) fat.
Why body fat percentage may be high
Elevated BF% may be related to caloric surplus and low physical activity, genetic factors, hormonal changes (menopause, hypothyroidism, elevated cortisol), sleep deprivation (less than 6 hours per night is associated with fat accumulation), chronic stress, and certain medications.
High BF%, even at a normal weight (so-called 'skinny fat'), is a metabolic risk factor — it is associated with insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, and hs-CRP.
Why body fat percentage may be low
Very low BF% (<6% for men, <14% for women) may indicate overly restrictive dieting, excessive exercise, eating disorders, or chronic illness. In women, very low fat levels can disrupt the menstrual cycle (hypothalamic amenorrhea) and affect bone density.
What to do next
- If BF% exceeds a healthy level — gradually increase physical activity (strength training is particularly effective for building muscle mass)
- Review your diet, especially refined carbohydrate and sugar intake
- If BF% is very low and you experience fatigue, feeling cold, or cycle irregularities — this is a topic for discussion with your doctor

Tracking over time
