What is resting heart rate?

Resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are at rest and not physically or emotionally aroused. Modern smartwatches and fitness bands measure resting heart rate continuously or at regular intervals — usually at night during sleep or during prolonged rest periods throughout the day.

Resting heart rate reflects the overall condition of your cardiovascular system. A trained heart pumps more blood per beat, so it needs fewer beats — this is why physically active people often have a lower resting heart rate. However, resting heart rate depends not only on fitness level — it is also affected by stress, sleep, medications, hydration, temperature, and many other factors.

It is important to understand that different devices use different algorithms and measure at different moments. Therefore, the absolute numbers may not match between devices — the most valuable approach is to track trends using the same device.

Reference ranges

From a clinical perspective, a normal resting heart rate for adults is considered to be 60–100 beats per minute. However, well-trained individuals may have a resting heart rate of 40–55 beats per minute — this is physiological bradycardia, which is generally not dangerous.

For wearable device data, these intervals apply as rough guidelines: 40–100 beats per minute is considered an acceptable range. The average resting heart rate for most healthy adults falls between 55–80 beats per minute. Norms are higher for children and adolescents.

Why might resting heart rate be high?

A consistently higher-than-usual resting heart rate may indicate:

  • Stress and anxiety — the sympathetic nervous system accelerates heart rhythm.
  • Insufficient sleep or poor-quality sleep — the body is not recovering adequately.
  • Dehydration — when blood volume decreases, the heart has to beat more often.
  • Overtraining — overtraining syndrome manifests as a paradoxically elevated resting heart rate.
  • Infection or illness — even without other symptoms, resting heart rate often rises 1–3 days before an illness manifests.
  • Caffeine and alcohol — especially when consumed in the evening.
  • Medications — some drugs (salbutamol, levothyroxine, certain antidepressants) increase heart rate.
  • Hyperthyroidism — elevated hormone levels speed up metabolism and heart rate.

Why might resting heart rate be low?

A lower-than-usual resting heart rate most often indicates:

  • Good physical fitness — a trained heart works more efficiently.
  • Adaptation to regular endurance training — runners, cyclists, and swimmers may have a resting heart rate of 38–50 beats per minute.
  • Use of beta-blockers or other heart-rate-lowering medications — these drugs directly reduce the frequency of heartbeats.
  • Hypothyroidism — reduced thyroid hormone levels can slow the heart rate.

However, if a low heart rate is accompanied by weakness, dizziness, fainting, or fatigue — this may indicate pathological bradycardia, which is worth discussing with a doctor.

What to do next?

Resting heart rate is most informative when monitored over the long term. If you notice a sudden change (an increase of 5–10 beats per minute lasting several days), consider possible causes: are you sleeping enough, could you be coming down with something, are you under excessive stress.

Practical steps: monitor sleep duration and quality, maintain regular physical activity, limit caffeine and alcohol in the evening, pay attention to hydration. If your resting heart rate consistently exceeds 90–100 beats per minute without a clear reason — consult a doctor.

Monitoring over time

A single resting heart rate reading has limited value — the trend over weeks and months is far more important. Many devices display a 7- or 30-day average — this is a more reliable indicator than a single-day measurement.

When you start exercising regularly, resting heart rate typically begins to decrease within 4–8 weeks. This is one of the most reliable signs of improving fitness. Conversely, a slow rise in resting heart rate without any change in training may signal that something is changing in your body.

Compare your data only with your own previous results, not with other people's numbers.
