What is REM sleep

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is the sleep phase during which the brain is highly active, vivid dreaming occurs, and the body's voluntary muscles are temporarily paralyzed. REM sleep plays an important role in memory consolidation, emotional processing, and learning. Smartwatches (Oura, Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watch) estimate REM sleep using heart rate and movement algorithms — this is an estimate, not a clinical measurement.

In adults, REM sleep typically accounts for 20–25% of total sleep time, or approximately 1.5–2 hours per night. REM periods lengthen as the night progresses — the majority of REM sleep occurs in the final hours before waking.

A general guideline: 1.5–2 hours of REM sleep per night, or 20–25% of total sleep time. Because each device uses a different algorithm, comparisons between different wearables are not precise. Track your personal trend on the same device.

Why REM sleep may be too short

The most common reasons REM sleep duration decreases:

  • Alcohol — even moderate consumption in the evening suppresses REM sleep, particularly in the first half of the night.
  • Insufficient total sleep time — sleeping only 5–6 hours means the later REM-rich cycles are missed.
  • Certain medications: antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), some sedative-hypnotics, and cannabinoids can suppress REM sleep.
  • Stress and anxiety — heightened sympathetic nervous system activity can disrupt sleep architecture.
  • Sleep disorders — sleep apnea interrupts sleep cycles and reduces total REM time.

Why REM sleep may be too long

Excessively prolonged REM sleep rarely causes concern, but can occur in the following situations:

  • REM rebound after sleep deprivation — following alcohol abstinence or discontinuation of certain medications, the body intensively restores REM sleep.
  • Depression — some research suggests that depression may be associated with earlier onset and longer duration of REM sleep.
  • Extended total sleep time (>9 hours) naturally yields more REM sleep.

What to do next

If you have noticed a consistent decline in REM sleep:

1. Track the trend for 2–4 weeks — a single night is not a reliable indicator. 2. Ensure adequate total sleep duration (7–9 hours) — REM sleep is concentrated toward the end of the night. 3. Avoid alcohol at least 3 hours before bedtime. 4. If you take medications, discuss with your physician whether they may be affecting your REM phase. 5. Compare with other metrics: HRV, resting morning heart rate, mood, and concentration.

Tracking over time

The weekly REM average is more reliable than any single night's data.
