What is deep sleep
Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep (N3 stage), is the most restorative phase of the sleep cycle. During this phase the brain generates slow delta waves, muscles fully relax, and both heart rate and breathing slow significantly. Smartwatches (Oura, Garmin, Apple Watch, Fitbit) estimate sleep stages using movement and heart rate algorithms — this is an estimate, not a clinical measurement. For this reason, it is most meaningful to track the trend over weeks rather than focus on any single night's figure.
Adults are generally recommended to obtain 1–2 hours of deep sleep per night, which corresponds to roughly 15–25% of total sleep time.
Normal values
There are no universally precise reference ranges, because each smartwatch uses its own proprietary algorithm. A general guideline: 1–2 hours of deep sleep per night is considered a healthy range. Younger individuals typically obtain more deep sleep, and the proportion naturally declines with age. If your device consistently shows less than 45 minutes of deep sleep, it is worth discussing with your physician.
Why deep sleep may be too short
Several common reasons deep sleep duration can decrease:
- Age — after age 40, the proportion of deep sleep naturally diminishes.
- Stress and elevated evening cortisol levels can prevent the body from reaching deeper sleep stages.
- Alcohol — while it may help you fall asleep faster, it suppresses deep sleep in the second half of the night.
- Caffeine consumed too late (less than 6 hours before bedtime) can reduce deep sleep duration.
- Sleep apnea — frequent arousals prevent the body from reaching deep stages.
- Poor sleep environment: noise, light, or an excessively warm room temperature.
Why deep sleep may be too long
Unusually prolonged deep sleep is less common and is generally not a concern. Possible reasons include:
- Intense physical exertion — after heavy training sessions the body naturally extends deep sleep for recovery.
- Sleep debt compensation — after several nights of insufficient sleep, the body attempts to recover lost deep sleep.
- Certain medications (e.g., some antidepressants) can alter sleep architecture.
What to do next
If you have noticed a consistent decline in deep sleep:
1. Track the trend for at least 2–4 weeks — a single night's data is not meaningful on its own. 2. Compare with other metrics: heart rate variability (HRV), nightly SpO2, and resting morning heart rate. 3. Review your sleep hygiene: room temperature (16–19 °C), a dark environment, and a consistent sleep schedule. 4. Limit alcohol and caffeine in the evening. 5. If your readings remain low and you experience persistent fatigue, discuss with your physician whether a sleep study (polysomnography) is warranted.
Tracking over time
The key strength of smartwatches is trend detection. Focus on your weekly average rather than individual nights. If your weekly average consistently falls below your personal baseline (for example, from 1.5 hours down to 0.8 hours), that is a signal to review your lifestyle or consult a specialist.
