What is sleep duration?
Sleep duration is the total time you spend sleeping per night. Smartwatches and fitness bands record this metric automatically, using motion sensors (accelerometers) and heart rate data. The device determines when you fell asleep and when you woke up, and calculates the total sleep time after subtracting nighttime awakenings.
Sleep duration is one of the most important health indicators. Adequate sleep allows the body to recover, strengthens the immune system, improves cognitive function, and regulates hormonal balance. Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and mental health disorders.
It is important to know that device accuracy in determining sleep duration is approximate — they may be off by 15–30 minutes in either direction. Despite this, long-term trends are informative.
Reference ranges
For most adults (18–64 years), the recommended sleep duration is 7–9 hours per night. For those over 65, 7–8 hours is recommended. For adolescents (14–17 years), 8–10 hours.
However, individual needs vary. Some adults function well on 6 hours, others need 10 — this depends on genetics, physical activity levels, health status, and life stage. The acceptable physiological range is considered to be 6–10 hours.
Note that sleep duration is not the only important parameter — sleep quality (proportion of deep sleep and REM phases, number of nighttime awakenings) is equally important.
Why might sleep duration be too short?
If your device consistently records less than 6 hours of sleep, possible causes include:
- Poor sleep hygiene — irregular sleep schedule, screen use before bed, noisy environment.
- Stress and anxiety — sympathetic nervous system activation interferes with falling asleep and maintains light sleep.
- Caffeine — a cup of coffee even 6 hours before bedtime can reduce sleep duration by 40 minutes.
- Alcohol — while it helps you fall asleep, it disrupts second-half-of-the-night sleep and reduces overall effective duration.
- Sleep disorders — insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome.
- Pain or chronic illness — arthritis, gastroesophageal reflux, chronic pain.
- Medications — some antidepressants, corticosteroids, and beta-blockers can affect sleep.
- Shift work or frequent time zone changes.
Why might sleep duration be too long?
If your device regularly shows more than 9–10 hours of sleep for an adult, it is worth paying attention:
- Poor sleep quality — if sleep is shallow and frequently interrupted, the body compensates with longer time in bed.
- Depression — hypersomnia (excessive sleep) is one of the symptoms of depression.
- Hypothyroidism — slows metabolism, causes fatigue and increased sleep need.
- Chronic fatigue — due to iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, or other causes.
- Sleep apnea — although sleep duration appears adequate, sleep is constantly interrupted by breathing pauses, so the person feels unrefreshed and sleeps longer.
Long-term sleep duration consistently exceeding 9 hours has been associated in studies with increased cardiovascular disease risk, though the causal relationship is not entirely clear.
What to do next?
If you see that your average sleep duration deviates from the 7–9 hour interval, start by reviewing your sleep hygiene. Practical steps:
- Set a regular bedtime and wake time, including weekends.
- Limit caffeine after lunch and alcohol in the evening.
- Create a dark, cool, and quiet sleep environment.
- Put screens away one hour before bedtime.
- If you cannot fall asleep within 20 minutes — get up and engage in a calming activity until you feel sleepy.
If sleep problems persist for longer than a month and affect daily functioning — consult a doctor.
Monitoring over time
A single night's sleep duration can vary greatly — this is normal. The informative metric is the 7- or 30-day average. Watch whether your average consistently falls within the 7–9 hour interval. If over the past 4 weeks your average has dropped below 6.5 hours — that is a signal to review your habits.
A useful exercise: compare sleep duration with other device metrics — resting heart rate and HRV. You will often see that after shorter nights, resting heart rate rises and HRV drops. This confirms that your body is sensitively reacting to sleep deprivation.
