What is body temperature deviation

Body Temperature Deviation is the difference between your nightly skin temperature and your personal baseline. This metric is measured by certain smart rings and watches (e.g., Oura) using a skin temperature sensor. The reading is expressed as a deviation from your baseline in degrees Celsius (e.g., +0.3 °C or -0.5 °C). This is not a conventional body temperature measurement — it is a skin temperature trend that helps identify physiological changes.

Normal values

The normal fluctuation range is -1.0 °C to +1.0 °C from your personal average. Day-to-day variations of ±0.3–0.5 °C are entirely normal and depend on physical activity, ambient temperature, sleep conditions, and the menstrual cycle (in women).

Why the deviation may be elevated

A persistently positive deviation (temperature higher than usual) can indicate:

  • An oncoming illness — body temperature often rises 1–2 days before symptoms appear (cold, influenza, COVID-19).
